Trendy, hip, and metropolitan, Canada can be an expensive place to visit. However, there are two cities that offer amazing travel experiences on the cheap if you know where to look. Which two cities might those be you ask? Vancouver and Toronto. Below are some tips to help you enjoy these cities on the cheap. You can enjoy all that they have to offer, without spending a fortune.

Vancouver - Canada

Canada – Vancouver

For starters, visit Granville Island. It was formerly home to a thriving industry, yet now it has been turned into a great family experience destination. Visit the area and come away with a sense of Vancouver’s history. Continue in that same family vein and take a stroll around Stanley Park. You can picnic, stop and smell the roses literally, and enjoy great natural scenery all the while. It is Vancouver’s crown jewel, and well worth a visit. To get more in touch with nature, hike the Grouse Grind. Walk the trail for free, or hop on a gondola for only 10 bucks. Afterwards, go hang out in one of Vancouver’s neighbourhoods and do a bit of people watching. You may spot a celebrity or two, you never know.

What else to do? Don’t worry, we are just getting started. There are so many other things to do such as visiting Christchurch Cathedral, take a mountain bike ride across the North Shore, walk around one of the art galleries or museums, explore the night market in Richmond, or play Frisbee Golf at the famed Queen Elizabeth Park. It is the largest recreation park in Vancouver.

Still need more? Tour the Olympic venues, wander around Lynn Canyon with its breathtaking suspension bridge, visit the Capilano Fish Hatchery or take a dip in the water at the beach… with or without clothes. Wreck Beach is the official nude beach of Vancouver so be prepared for taking a dip au natural if you choose to go there.

There are plenty of cheap dining options too, ranging from sub shops and pizza places to more established sit down venues. Get creative and scour the Internet for cheap deals as they change frequently. You can always eat on the cheap in Vancouver.

Canada – Toronto

This is another quintessential Canadian city that has so much to offer. For instance, you can attend the Canadian Opera Company’s concert free of charge during week days. They hold these special performances during lunch hour throughout the week and they range from musical revenues to dance. Simply head over to the Four Seasons Center for the Performing Arts to take in one of these amazing concerts.

You can also head to the east end trendy neighbourhood known as The Beaches. Take a streetcar on the cheap and see some of the most famous streets in Toronto while you make your way to there. Then, enjoy strolling down the boardwalk visiting all of the different shops and restaurants peppered throughout Queen Street east.

Next, head over to one of the museums. The art gallery is free every Wednesday from 6pm to 8.30pm. In addition, the Bata Shoe Museum and Museum of Contemporary Canadian art offer pay-what-you-can-times. To round out the art scene, visit the gallery at St. Lawrence market. It’s always free and offers a great look into the history and culture of Toronto.

Kensington Market is a great way to experience Toronto on the cheap as well. It’s not your usual farmers market rife with fruits and vegetables, yet you will find more than your fair share there. It is actually a neighbourhood. The area is known for its funky hipster vibe (think organic coffee shops and retro vintage furniture). Perhaps the best thing about the neighbourhood though, are the plethora of places to get a meal on the cheap. Enjoy everything from burgers to empanadas. You might come back several times during your trip just for that!

In addition to Kensington Market, there are many other places throughout Toronto that offer cheap eats and lodging. Again, simply check the Internet for your visit to ensure you get a lower rate. Armed with those, you can eat for pennies while others spend much more.

There are many other places to visit in Canada as well, yet Toronto and Vancouver offer some of the best destinations and experiences for the money. If you’re looking to do Canada on a shoestring these two cities have so much to offer a budget traveller. In fact, you might consider yourself to be a world traveller when you walk away from certain areas of the cities known as Little Greektown and Chinatown. Different types of culture and souvenirs abound there as well. There is no better way to do Canada on the cheap then with a visit to Vancouver or Toronto.

The only thing left for you to do now is plan your trip!
