Awesome African Adventures – Experiences for Your Bucket List
Africa is massive. It is simply huge. And for most of us, it is sadly an unknown. Africa as a continent is all too frequently overlooked as a holiday destination, and this is unfortunate. The reasons are numerous, but the main one is likely to be a lack of knowledge: this leads to people not realising the unbelievable sights that are on offer and mistakenly thinking that a vacation to Africa will be prohibitively expensive.
But in the latter case, that is not necessarily true – there are plenty of reasonably priced places to stay, and if you look hard enough you can get great deals on flights, too – and for the former, well… that’s what this article is all about. We’re barely scratching the surface here; there really is that much on offer!
Hike the Peaks of the Atlas Mountains – Toubkal National Park, Morocco
Take your time when you’re trekking through the Atlas range, especially if you’re hoping to reach the highest point in all of North Africa – the peak of Jbel Toubkal. Because it reaches an imposing 4167 metres above sea level, you’ll want to avoid rushing through the trek, unless you want to run the risk of getting altitude sickness.
But there’s another reason to take it slow: to enjoy your surroundings. The landscape is beautiful in a way that you can only find in Africa, taking you from vast expanses of terracotta soil and alongside craggy precipices to tranquil mountain lakes. It is epic in every sense of the word.
Take a Walk on the Wild Side – South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
A completely different national park experience to the mountains of Morocco, the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia allows you to get properly up close and personal with nature, offering you the chance to go on a fantastic big game safari… on foot.
Head to the far north of the park and you will find Robin Pope Safaris, one of the better tour operators in the area. The experts here will take you along the banks of the River Mupamadzi – here, in the woodlands and the savannah, you might be able to spot everything from giraffes and zebras to lions and elephants. Wild!
Climb to the Top of Table Mountain – Cape Town, South Africa
You really can’t say that you “get” Cape Town until you’ve seen it from above, and there really is no better way of getting that incredible view than from the top of the beautiful Table Mountain. The views are truly unbeatable. You get to see the true sprawling expanse of Cape Town, and then you get to see how it is completely dwarfed by the surrounding sea and by Table Mountain itself.
There are plenty of different routes to the top but, provided you have a decent level of fitness and around six hours to spare, we’d suggest heading up Skeleton Gorge.
